I got a new monitor. I now get a codec error when I try to play avis or movies which played fine in the past?

When I switch back to my old monitor I can play the avis and movies without any problems. I received the monitor second hand so it’s not the newest model. It’s a Dell and I tried to find the drivers on the Dell site but it wouldn’t accept any of the info off the back of the monitor to tell me what the model is or where to get new drivers.

I suspect that it is not the monitor as error will not be displayed because a monitor doesn’t care about codecs. There are two common problems that I can think as two why this happen.

Screen is not at 16bit or higher. It check this, click on your desktop, choose Properties, then choose the settings tab. look at the Color Quality dropdown, it should be at least 16bits.

If this is OK, I would suggest you uninstall any codec package you have (that you haven’t paid for) and install CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/). This is a nice small set of codecs written by anime lovers that will play most file types (including DVDs.)
