What is the best way to book a flight and car rental?

I’m planning a trip from Los Angeles, CA to San Antonio, TX and I want to make sure I get the best price for airfare and car rental. I will be traveling in early November. I have been shopping around on some internet travel planning sites and it’s so overwhelming. I don’t know what are the best times to fly or anything.

The last flight coming back we use it for just day or two so would suggest going on hertzcom or aviscom and drop off at the cheapest rental car rate is to get the best way to fly is to get the last flight out for just day or two.
